Many of our visitors to Cornwall come to discover the amazing countryside and all it has to offer, but as you will find there is a lot of area to cover and an astounding amount to explore.
To allow all walkers to make the most of this wonderful resource and to help in deciding what walks to do, there is a brilliant app available to download to make the selection process easier, and to ensure you get to the locations most suited to you. Most of us here in the office have this app downloaded, and it is our go to when we are out and about. We felt it was only fair to share with you our knowledge about this excellent app – iWalk Cornwall.
iWalk Cornwall is a compilation of thoughtfully crafted walks and a guided walks mobile app which, is free to download. There are in excess of 250 detailed walks all over Cornwall and with each walk costing just £1.99 to purchase and download, offering excellent value. It has been developed by two brothers who are Cornish natives and have a passion for Cornwall. In addition to new walks being regularly added to the app, the existing walks are frequently updated for changes to the footpaths, and more local information is added relating to the heritage, nature, geography and natural history associated with the chosen walk. Based on your location, the app provides information about points of interest along the route, and more importantly takes away any worries about getting lost when out and about, the directions are 100% accurate.
The walks range in distance from 2 miles (3.22 km) to 10 miles (16.09km), and cover coastal, moorland, woodland and riverside, as well as pub walks. The walks are categorised by steepness, length and themes, so simply filter by the type of walk you would like, there is a walk to suit all walkers. Most of the walks are circular. The app will guide you round your chosen route using GPS; it is your navigation for walking, telling you when to turn, if you go off route a little buzz will let you know, with instructions on how to get back on track, no more getting lost and wandering aimlessly.
Directions are very clear, and a map shows the route, where you are and which way you are facing. The app informs you how far you have travelled, how far left to go and an estimate of how long it will take based on your personal walking speed.
A great feature is that once the walk is downloaded, the app doesn’t need a phone or Wi-Fi signal for the actual walk. Another useful feature is that the app detects if you are running low on battery and offers helpful power saving tips to help make it last the duration of the walk.
This app is pretty invaluable for those wanting to explore Cornwall, the GPS is precise, and the narrative provided is excellent, with lovely facts along the way, making the walks more interesting. It is comparative to having your own personal guide. Even if you are an avid walker here in Cornwall you are sure to discover new routes in places you thought you knew.
