A Kick-about with Cornwall Football Golf

Published January 11th, 2022 A Kick-about with Cornwall Football Golf Published in: Sports

Many of us love football and Adventure/Crazy golf, so it makes sense to combine the two to create a fun experience doesn’t it! Surprisingly, it does and this new game is gaining momentum.

It was first developed in the Scandinavia in 2004 and has spread throughout the globe, reaching our far corner of the United Kingdom in 2014 when the UK's first FootballGolf Park opened in Cornwall.

So, what exactly is FootballGolf? Firstly, it is a fun game and more closely associated with adventure golf. Like adventure golf there are either 9 or 18 holes, each with a par, and the rules of golf are followed. You start off at the tee with a map and instructions of how to play the hole. Players must kick the ball towards the flag, negotiating tricky bunkers as well as obstacles to challenge you.

This fusion of the two games involves players kicking a ball into an oversized golf cup in the ground in a as few shots as possible. The concept is like adventure golf in this respect however, you are using your foot and a much bigger ball. All players can score when playing FootballGolf.

This activity has all the fun of Adventure golf with the twist of kicking a ball.

This fun game is suitable for all ages and abilities and can cater to any group size. It is a great way to get some fresh air and exercise whilst enjoying spectacular views over the coast. So, pick up your score cards and get going, you can’t beat some fun and friendly competition whist getting your kicks.

To find out a bit more about this sport we caught up with Toby who designed and built the UK's first FootballGolf Park - Cornwall FootballGolf

Hi Toby, thanks for taking the time to chat with us and answer our questions.

What made you get involved with FootballGolf?

"I'd always played football but as I got older the knees started to struggle so I wanted to continue to be able to kick a ball without the worry of injury! I then thought of football and golf, a little online research later I found out there were “FootballGolf’ courses in Scandinavia so off I went on a research trip!"

Is it difficult to play FootballGolf?

"Not at all, we’ve had it so many times that groups arrive to play and the ones who dont like football often do the best as its not about power."

Do you require any prior experience to play?

"Absolutely not! it's similar to crazy or adventure golf, no experience is necessary it's just about having fun."

Is all equipment provided?

"Yes all equipment is supplied, the only thing players need is a comfortable pair of trainers or shoes."

Do you have to wear specific shoes to play?

"The best advise is to not miss any obstacles! If you do you need to play back around them to then go through the correct way."

Who tends to play better the golfer or the footballer?

"The Golfer because they will play a better mental/thinking game whereas the footballer tends to take more risks."

Is there a maximum number of people that can play?

"The maximum group size per fairway, is a five ball ( 5 people). We have two 18 hole course so can accommodate up to 180 players on the courses at one time."
